Audiophiles Should Read This Book!

Ok. The author is a "somebody" in the world of high-end audio. I recognized his name from articles appearing in Stereophile magazine, most recently in the January 2015 issue. He knows more about the recording process than most anyone. He communicates his ideas very well, but, most importantly, he address the most relevant subjects and issues.

This is a great book for an audiophile to read because it examines the details of source origination -- the recording process -- and relates it directly to the playback process. The chapters on mastering are must reading, especially the discussion of loudness, monitor quality, and monitor setup. Oh, and don't forget the chapter on jitter. This term is thrown around in audio equipment analysis as if everyone knows what it is. The discussion is so confusing elsewhere, one might be thinking it has something to do with insects dancing inside a USB cable (jitterbugs). Read what Katz has to say. Very informative.

I loved the book, and will keep it as a reference. Too bad it didn't come with a hard cover, or a better cover. The cover paper is really cheap quality, but I won't subtract a star for that.

The best book on mastering just got better, again.

What can I say, this is the 3rd time I have purchased this book and it just keeps getting better and more up to date. Bob is the guru of audio mastering without a doubt, and his technical information is well worth reading for all stripes of audio engineers, not just those with designs on mastering. There are tidbits throughout, so you don't have to read it cover to cover, just open a section and get up to speed quickly.

It sort of reads as a lecture. It was a textbook for an "Issues in National Security" graduate-level class. Although it touched on some important topics, it was sometimes a challenge to follow what Dr. Snow was trying to say.

Fairly good overall

Explains things pretty well, and tries to be up-to-date. Pretty well balanced on the whole. I got a little sick of the author's invented word "intermestic", a blend of "international" and "domestic". The discussion of nuclear Cold War issues seemed a bit sketchy, but maybe that's okay in a book trying to be relevant in today. The "weakness in the American economy" may have gotten more emphasis than it deserved.

Funny, Original Story about an Old Farm Woman and her Flying Cow!

I couldn't resist the cover and title of this book at a nearby library, so I checked it out for my three year old. He fell asleep halfway through (he's not feeling well) but I continued reading it aloud. I had to finish it. It's is a great book about a sturdy, no-nonsense old farm woman and her stubborn cow, and the lengths she goes to to bring her cow back when it decides to take flight one day.

Please, find this book and read it to your child. If they think old people are funny, or they like farm animals, or hopefully both, this will tickle their fancy. The title of this anthology, Women and World Religions, was chosen deliberately to emphasize that its primary focus is on actual women and their experiences as active agents of their spiritual lives—as opposed to women in religion as goddesses or other images and symbols of females that are found in religious myths, art, and scriptures. This book explores how women from many parts of the world have thought about, acted, and been treated as members of a religious tradition.

Introductory text for each of the major world religions lays the foundation for readings that were selected with an eye toward answering such questions as:

• How have women practiced religion?
• Have their beliefs and rituals differed from those of men?
• How have women within the major world religions negotiated their spiritual lives within traditions that are not only male dominated, but also sexist and patriarchal?
• Have they successfully carved out a "separate sphere" for their own spiritual activities, or are their religious lives in large part defined for them by male leaders?
• How has the status of women changed within religions, both historically and in terms of future prospects?

This fresh approach to the study of women's religious experiences offers important insights into the significance of religion in societies around the world.

About the Author
Lucinda Joy Peach was Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at American University, where she taught courses in the areas of applied ethics, moral philosophy, and women s studies. She published widely in areas of law, religion, ethics, and gender, including the impact of religious lawmaking on women s rights, the ethics of women in military combat, corporate social responsibility for human rights, and women s human rights, especially in the area of sex trafficking.

The primary focus of Women and World Religions is "actual" women in world religions, as opposed to goddesses or other images and symbols of females and the feminine found in religious myths, art and scriptures. Even when women's relationship to religion is considered in other world religions texts, the experience and status of real women's lives has often been ignored. Women and World Religions rectifies this.

The understanding of "world religions" used in this text—that is, those religions which are represented by people living in more than one limited region in the world—also differs from the more traditional understanding that the term only encompasses the "big five" traditions of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. In addition to chapters covering each of these traditions, Women and World Religions includes religions that have had an impact outside of their place of origins, including Taoism, Confucianism, Shinto, African indigenous and tribal religions, and goddess-centered religions from different parts of the world.

The Introduction addresses the questions, Why focus on women and religion? and What does a gender perspective contribute to the study of religion? It also considers some important commonalities and differences in women's religious experience including: How have women practiced religion? How have their religious beliefs and practices differed from those of men, if at all? How have women been treated differently than men in religious settings, and What effect, if any, has gender segregation and discrimination had on women's religious experiences?

Succeeding chapters demonstrate how women from very different cultures and regions of the world have thought about, acted, and been treated as members of their religious tradition and culture. Introductory text for each chapter provides an overview of the religious tradition, describes some of the more important aspects of the relationship of female-gendered and feminine images and symbols to "real" women, and discusses women's relationship to the tradition and the changes in the religious status of women in that tradition. Following this material are essays that reflect real women's experiences in the religious tradition. The chapters end with questions for class discussion and references for further study and exploration of women in the 'religious tradition covered.

In addition to informing the reader about women's experience in the variety of world religious traditions, another goal of the text is to reveal a number of striking similarities and differences among women in different religious traditions and illuminate how the study of women's experience in religion can enrich the study of religion altogether.

About the Author
Edwin Abbott Abbott (1838-1926) has been ranked as one of the leading scholars and theologians of the Victorian era. He received highest honors in mathematics, classics, and theology at St. John's College, Cambridge, and in 1862 began a brilliant career, during which he served as schoolmaster of some of England's outstanding schools. At the same time he distinguished himself as a scholar, and in 1889 he retired to his studies. Four Weddings and a Funeral

The reason I ordered this book was because my boyfriend's favorite movie is "Four Weddings and a Funeral", and in the movie one of the characters dies, and they read a poem called "Funeral Blues" at the funeral. It is an incredibly moving poem, very emotional in any situation where someone you love is gone.
