Miss Rosemary knows that her cow, Gertrude, has a mind of her own. But when Gertrude takes up a new hobby, Miss Rosemary is faced with a problem: how do you milk a flying cow? First Miss Rosemary tries to lure Gertrude down with a fresh bale of alfalfa, then she tries to catch the cow with a fishing rod, next she tries to rope Gertrude with a lasso. Nothing works until Miss Rosemary has a brilliant idea. She makes a new cow, -Matilda, out of fabric and stuffing. When Gertrude sees she has been replaced, she decides to return to earth. Once there she finds a new hobby--driving the tractor.

From Publishers Weekly
In a starred review, PW called this story of a brazen bovine who insists on flying "an impressively polished first book" and "a merry and mirthful story." Ages 3-6. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-- " 'It's a known fact cows don't fly,' " says Miss Rosemary, but apparently Gertrude has not heard. She's the picture of bovine grace as she glides over the farm cutting figure eights, and simply radiates contentment. Miss Rosemary, on the other hand, is concerned about what the neighbors will think and wonders how she could possibly milk a flying cow. With dogged determination, the elderly woman sets about bringing Gertrude down. After several nearly disastrous attempts, she begins a subtler campaign by bringing in a substitute "cow." Johnson's high-flying original tale will have preschool listeners rolling off their sit-upons. The only question is who will be their favorite character--the uniquely talented and territorial Gertrude or the wily Miss Rosemary. His full-color, acrylic paintings are the perfect match for the humorous story. Executed in pastel tones with backgrounds reminiscent of Seurat, these fine illustrations reveal the changing moods and gradual dishevelment of this fine country lady and the bliss experienced by her cow. Youngsters will enjoy noticing Miss Rosemary's goose and pig, whose expressions range from perplexity to aggravation to satisfaction to complete amazement. A virtuoso debut! --Jeanne Marie Clancy, Upper Merion Township Library, King of Prussia, PA

From Kirkus Reviews
Poor Miss Rosemary! Gertrude, her cow, has a mind of her own, and now she's literally up in the air, where neither threats, promises, lures, nor lassoes ensnare her. Solution: a sturdy-looking replacement--stitched together, stuffed, shod with roller skates, and dubbed ``Matilda''--so provokes Gertrude's jealousy that she comes ``down like a rocket..land[s] squarely on Matilda and mashe[s] her flat.'' Johnson, ``a well-known painter from Kentucky's Appalachian coalfields,'' tells his comical tall tale with a pleasantly brisk lilt and sets it firmly in mountain farm country, outlining the vagrant cow and her vigorous, matronly mistress in authoritative black, dappling the landscape in luminous color, and deftly varying full-page scenes with spreads and vignettes. A delightful and well-polished first performance. (Picture book. 4-8) -- Copyright 1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Funny, Original Story about an Old Farm Woman and her Flying Cow!
By Anon
I couldn't resist the cover and title of this book at a nearby library, so I checked it out for my three year old. He fell asleep halfway through (he's not feeling well) but I continued reading it aloud. I had to finish it. It's is a great book about a sturdy, no-nonsense old farm woman and her stubborn cow, and the lengths she goes to to bring her cow back when it decides to take flight one day.

Please, find this book and read it to your child. If they think old people are funny, or they like farm animals, or hopefully both, this will tickle their fancy. I have included a picture from the book- not the funniest picture because I don't want to be a spoiler, a good one nonetheless that will give you a feel for this story.

Lastly, I'd like to thank the author. This book is a treasure. Thanks for bringing this book into being.

How to bring down a flying cow.
By Hope Irvin Marston
Miss Rosemary’s humorous efforts to bring down Gertrude, her flying cow, didn’t succeed…that is until she made Gertrude jealous. Gertrude is home now, but Miss Rosemary sees her eyeing the farm tractor. Do cows drive tractors?

Children who enjoyed Gertrude’s flying adventures would applaud if the writer/illustrator created a second book about this unusual cow and her wise owner. So would I.

-Hope Irvin Marston, author of EYE ON THE IDITAROD: AISLING'S QUEST
