Complete, comprehensive and compelling

Poirier and McKee present a wealth of information on the history of human evolution. They outline the methods of dating, identifying and assembling hominid fossils. Dating is shown to be, within the ranges of accuracy, nearly an absolute with today's technology. With the age of the fossil[s] established and the parts identified, the fossil may then be placed in its proper location on the human family tree. Poirier and McKee spend the remainder of the book describing the concepts, controversies and resolutions associated with that final step. The material requires attentive perusal, but the interested reader will be richly rewarded.
Early hominid fossils were chronologically located by stratigraphy - the position of the fossil in the rocks in relation to other, known, remnants. The early finds were often located in poorly identified areas, or mistakenly dated for a variety of reasons. Paleoanthropologists of an earlier day lacked the technology available today. Worse, they were often unaware of the need to examine the likely environment of the time the fossil was laid down. As the authors point out, this misunderstanding led to misinterpretation of how evolutionary relationships were structured. Today's "digs" are the subject of multi-discipline effort, with botanists, geologists and other fields represented. The more comprehensive picture laid out by these environment associated with the find allow a firmer footing on our ancestral lineage.
While that assertion sounds promising and our heritage is now viewed with confidence, nothing could be further from the truth. Where the human evolutionary tree once looked rather simple, with but a few offshoots extending from the central trunk, the improved accuracy of dating shows many branches. How many of these truly belong on the main branch and how many led to the dead end of extinction is what gives this book its real value.
Paleoanthropology has been among the liveliest of sciences. The debates and controversies have left academic halls and achieved public exposure. Poirier and McKee present the contentions of most of the major figures in the field with circumspection and clarity. With each new find, various interpretations arose, researchers attacking and defending positions from various foundations. The authors give each assertion its due, with resolution occasionally based on their own assessment. They have no hesitation in stating their own position, but it's given with justifications. Counter arguments are made with confirming data. Evidence is shown, but not nearly as strongly as the need for new results. This book, in many respects, reads like an academic work, but that in no small part is due to the authors'
call for more work in the field.
It would be unfair to say that every hominid fossil is given the authors' personal scrutiny, but the impression is proximate. Nearly every major site, with many of the associated prime fossils are described, sometimes with maps and photographs. The illustrative material, maps, diagrams and photographs are invaluable. About the only missing element is a single skeleton and skull with the bones frequently discussed in the book labeled. While many are, they must be examined out of context in many cases. If you have the anatomy, you won't need the information, but the rest of us require the crutch.
For anyone wishing to keep abreast of the research in determining where humanity comes from, this book is a treasure. Given the amount of information the authors had to cope with, the work is clear, unequivocal and immensely valuable. While not a light read, there's little to obstruct even the novice reader. The material is well organized and presented with a clear, straightforward style. Since the authors' aim is to explain [and recruit!] without perplexing the reader or seeking adherence to positions, they have produced a book that will endure.

I appreciate that it tries to take an unbiased standpoint, which is easy to overlook with anthropology, but I can't exactly say it was the most exhilarating textbook I've read.

Highly Recommend - Attacks every aspect of Volunteering!

EHHH is an amazing book for those of us that feel a different calling. Volunteering is something that comes from within. Barry does a very thorough job of breaking down the why in volunteering along with all the curiousity floating in your mind, such as: How to organize, how to manage, how to motivate, and supporting your volunteer teams (among many subjects).

Highly recommend to anyone getting into the action of volunteering, whether as a leader or a disciple to the process itself.
Must read for anyone in the worship arena or just in the spirit of giving back.

Having had the pleasure of previously working with Mr. Altland, I was excited to see that he had published this book. Don't let the title mislead you as this is not only a book about volunteering, but is applicable to all leaders. As a recently promoted people leader, I found this easy read provides guidance for coaching and tips for keeping yourself and others engaged.

It's almost like a handbook for leaders

This book is a must if you are a leader in an organization that depends on the talents of volunteers. The stereotype of a volunteer is debunked. Barry brings the idea of the volunteer up to a professional level. He explores how a person contributing to an organization has needs to be met, and a leader can guide and cultivate the volunteer for his or her benefit and the benefit of the organization. It can be a win for all parties with focused development and action.

It is also a quick read, structured in practical language. It's almost like a handbook for leaders. Any leader would benefit from this book, profit or non-profit. I enjoyed it and was able to apply its principles immediately to my HRD consultancy world.

"Best Americans" still the best

Fall is here, making me sad for the end of summer, but happy because this is the season of the Best American series. Anthologies like this are always interesting because if you don’t like what you’re reading, a new article will come up in a few pages.

So a lot depends on how well the articles are chosen, and in this case the selection is brilliant. You would have to subscribe to a large number of magazines to get these stories, and each subscription would be more than the cost of this book.

As you read these articles you will wonder how much information on science and nature you have missed. I subscribe to the Scientific American and also read daily websites, yet all of these stories are new to me, and just about all of them are articles that I wish I read in the original.

I read this book as fast as I read fiction by familiar authors, because the stories here are important. Some of them relate to my experience, like remembering experiences under anesthetic, and others show hidden dangers of genealogy research combined with DNA testing.

The only story I had a little trouble with was that of a trapper who caught beavers and foxes. I felt it was a little “Nature red in tooth and claw,” but then I thought that it wasn’t good to hide myself away from this.

If you’re the slightest bit interested in science and nature writing, you should get this book. You will be amazed at the range of subjects that prove interesting in ways you didn’t expect. And, as an anthology, you don’t have to devote an entire books worth of reading in one sitting.

Wide-Ranging and Consistently Well-Written

Good science doesn’t always make for good writing and - minus the supporting graphics and imagery that likely accompanied many of these essays in their original form – language is even more exposed. Yet the high caliber of writing – augmented by some wordsmith ‘ringers’ including Nicholas Carr - make this anthology an easy and thought-provoking pleasure to spend time with.

There’s a good mix of animal science and more ‘human-oriented’ topics, along with much that intersects including climate change.
A personal favorite (as someone who works in the field with an interest in learning science) is ‘The Great Forgetting’, that deals with the influence of software automation on human learning - in this case, auto-piloting systems that increasingly leave commercial pilots with less and less to do in the cockpit. While no doubt contributing to record flight safety statistics, they also raise the potential for entirely new classes of system failures and accidents.

Other essays I enjoyed (if also found somewhat disturbing) deal with the appearance of ‘hybrid’ animal species as a suspected result of climate change, animal ‘de-extinction’ efforts by means of cloning, and the revitalization of Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique following years of civil war that destroyed it. There are some ‘Nova-style’ travelogues-in-text on Alaska’s wild white sheep and the march of fire ants through the American South. An extended exploration of beaver trapping was unexpectedly engrossing.

Besides the animal world, there’s a story on the politico-economics of urban coastal land management in the wake of storms such as Sandy, a genuinely uplifting piece on the continued existence of leprosy in this country, the dawn of the Anthropocene (look it up) and the influence of television on the behavior patterns of young rural Indian women as a form of population control.

And just when you’re convinced things can’t get any worse on our destined-to-be-uninhabited earth, ‘The Madness of the Planets’ by Corey S. Powell raises the specter of unstable planetary bodies in a gimpy solar system where earth could find itself driving headlong through the Mother of All Road Construction Projects with asteroids and debris taking some major scrapes and dents out of us.

My personal interests are along the lines of math-science/physics/chaos theory and, while there isn’t a whole lot here that’s right in my wheelhouse, there are plenty of fascinating pieces that should hold the attention of anyone with a scientific bent, casual or pro, generalist or specialist.

More philosophy (and less science) than I expected

A nice mix of articles, though climate change was discussed in 4 of the 24 articles (and one of those four articles was too political as it named several politicians who do not believe in climate change). Also, I was a bit surprised that several articles addressed both the science and the ethics of applying that science. Anyway, here’s a summary of the articles

I’m really pleased to see Ken Condon’s new book and DVD, Riding in the Zone: Advanced Techniques for Skillful Motorcycling.� I helped introduce Ken to Motorcycle Consumer News a few years ago, as a means to keep the Proficient Motorcycling column alive. At first, Ken followed the “Hough” format for the column, but then gained the writing skill to put the PM column in his own words and also generate the monthly Street Strategy tips.� Over the past couple of years, Ken has been working with Dan Kennedy of Whitehorse Press to develop a book and companion DVD that would provide a new look at motorcycling skills and riding strategies. Frankly, I’m impressed. About half the book deals with mental concepts such as risk awareness. The other half is about physical skill development—mastering motorcycle control. As an MSF certified RiderCoach and track school instructor, Ken has a lot of experience explaining difficult concepts such as countersteering, and the DVD is a great tool for�seeing the techniques in action.� When I received my advance copy of Riding in the Zone, I noticed it was on the small side—less than 8” � 10” � 1/2”� thick. But as I began to study Ken’s advice and view the companion DVD, I realized that it’s exactly the right size. The DVD is done simply but with lots of live action to demonstrate what Ken is saying. The quality is excellent, so you can easily understand the techniques. There are lots of color photos and diagrams in the book and with so much information on the DVD, that means the book can be compact. It’s small enough to fit in a tank bag, so you can take it out to the practice range. And the semi-hard coated cover and high quality binding mean it’s likely to survive the trip.� Why are riding skills so important these days? Well, back in the 1970s, riders involved in crashes were most often victims of collisions with errant automobile drivers. Today, we’re seeing more and more riders who crashed their bikes in noncollision situations. It’s clear that motorcyclists need more emphasis on controlling our bikes, in addition to avoiding collisions.� You might wonder how I can praise a “competing” book, considering that I also have skills books on the market, including the recent second edition of Proficient Motorcycling, published by Bowtie Press. I don’t see Riding in the Zone as competition; rather, Ken and I are both attempting to help riders get more proficient. Ken has a different way of dealing with riding skills, and I believe our books complement each other. Riding in the Zone contains a lot of street-riding wisdom from Ken’s MCN columns, but it’s written in an entirely different manner that I know you’ll find fresh and informative.� In my opinion, this is one of the best motorcycle skills books on the market to day, and both Ken and Whitehorse are to be commended for making it available.

A motorcyclist for more than three decades, Ken Condon is best known as the current author of the monthly Proficient Motorcycling and Street Strategies columns for Motorcycle Consumer News. He is also the chief instructor for Tony's Track Days at Loudon race track and is an experienced Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor.

Good Book, Better Video, But Not "Advanced"

I received this book earlier in the week and breezed through the content pretty quickly in a couple of evenings. Let me just say that I've been voraciously reading all the motorcycle technique books I can get my hands on including both of David Hough's books and Lee Parks' Total Control.

Ken spends over half the pages of Riding in the Zone on very basic concepts that are already well covered in every other text, including the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) workbook. This was the biggest disappointment to me as the subtitle of the book is "advanced techniques for skillful motorcycling." The second half of the book covers some intermediate topics that are generally covered well in existing books. When getting to the advanced topics, such as suspension setup, Ken simply refers you to other texts.

So why did I give this four stars despite being disappointed with the book? Well, the book has two great things going for it. First, unlike the David Hough books, Ken provides clear exercises for practicing the techniques. That's something I haven't found elsewhere and was the real reason I was excited to get this book. The second and most important reason is that the book comes with a well produced, clear, and relevant DVD that covers the topics. In fact your time would be better spent simply watching the video and practicing the exercises.

In summary, this book should really be subtitled "Basic and Intermediate Techniques." Without the high quality DVD I would give this title three stars. If you're looking for one book that really does cover advanced techniques I'd highly recommend Lee Parks' Total Control. People happiest with this book are likely to be those that just completed the MSF course or those that have never taken it.

* Deceptive subtitle. This is not a book of advanced techniques. For that read Lee Parks' Total Control
* Lack of depth on many topics

Reinforces some of the basic skills, elaborates on a few others

Riding in the Zone

Most of the beginning chapters involve the soft skills and science with motorcycle riding. Once the reader progresses to about the 50% point, skills and exercises are introduced which greatly helped with passing the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic RiderCourse. Ken's exercises also help evolve beyond the BRC's instructions with topics like body positioning and trail braking (which will get you scolded by the MSF instructors if they saw you doing it during the cornering exercises). I found the book to be a good supplement with other books like Proficient Motorcycling, Total Control, and Twist of the Wrist 2.

The DVD that comes with this book is a useful supplement as it demonstrates a lot of the techniques covered in the book. Ken also shows off his lovely daughter Jeannine during the body positioning demonstration. I wasn't sure why he did this, but it didn't detract from the lesson so it's all good.

I didn't feel this book was as mandatory as some of the other riding books, but it did cover body positioning and trail braking which isn't as widely discussed in other texts.

Great Discussion of Necessary Riding Skills and Great DVD

Ken Condon provides an excellent discussion of the key skills required to ride safely. He picked up the mantle of David Hough in writing an MC safety column for MCN Magazine, with David's help. While Hough's Proficient Motorcycling books look into more depth on many road hazards, such as edge traps, and are a highly recommended read / re-read, Ken's book covers basic MC handling skills (as does Hough's). David has over 45 years riding experience, and Ken has over 30. Both have / are MC safety trainers. But Ken also brings track experience to bear. And his DVD illustrates all the key points in the book and the drills. Ken spends much time stressing prctice drills to cover each point. And this is a smaller book, suitable to bring along for parking lot practice sessions. I recommend it highly as an important addition to the rider's library for safe, enjoyable riding "in the groove" or "in the zone" when everything comes together for a great, safe riding experience.
