A book that fits to my own experience

Although it is written in a very racey style, the main message of this book is refresheningly simple and to-the-point. Additionally it is exactly fitting to my own experiences when looking for a job. I therefore can (and have) recommended to anyone coming fresh into the marketplace and starting to look for a job.

pretty misleading book title!

A book title such as "Jobs That Don't Suck" is sure to attract people like me, who want to avoid soul-sucking employment and find humane and life-affirming work environments. Unfortunately, we are not the intended audience for this guide.

The prevailing advice here seems to be that you should kiss a lot of butt; come in early and stay late, even if it means typing pages and pages of gobbledygook or playing computer Solitaire for hours; and suppress any and all individuality of which you might be in possession. The vast majority of work environments described in this book are characterized as backstabbing, brutal, and cutthroat. People talk about developing ulcers and alcoholism in response to their jobs' stress. You will apparently be working every waking hour with people you hate and who would sell you out in a minute if it advanced their own careers. And these are the jobs that DON'T suck?!

Throw labor laws out the door -- if you don't want to work weekends without pay, you have a "sucky attitude." (Not an exact quotation. The exact quotation is that "your attitude sucks," pg. 271.) Ditto for unpaid overtime and skipping your paid lunch breaks. You know, there were people who DIED to give us the 40-hour workweek. Authors such as Drozdyk show huge disrespect to them by advocating we all join in on a (rat) race to the bottom, backward in time to the bad old days of exploited laborers.

The politics of this book really bothered me in parts. Founders of corporations are romanticized as self-made men who worked harder than most anyone else is willing, and we are told to grovel at their feet in thanks for the opportunity to cut into their bottom line by taking a salary. Some people might see it another way -- that most workers make their companies far more money than they are being paid.

There are constant implicit assumptions throughout that the reader is a trust-fund baby with the ability to: (1) pick up and move to New York City without any job prospects, (2) bum around in Europe for a year while "finding" oneself, (3) work indefinitely for no pay at a grueling internship, or (4) pay one's way to out-of-state conferences to get in extra schmoozing time. Surely these are all great things to do for those with the appropriate resources at their disposal. What about the majority of people?

The information about the Internet is laughably outdated. ("I've been on the Internet for two years now!" "Eighty-five percent of college students use E-mail!") I haven't bothered to check out the recommended websites under the assumption that none of them would even work.

I might not recommend against skimming through this book, but with so many other career-advice guides out there, you could probably get the same kind of information elsewhere. There's really no reason to depress yourself with this one, unless you get a kick out of the "sassy" language (read: casual use of profanity and slang). Its depiction of working life is so overwhelmingly negative. I would not recommend it to anyone who is making that transition into the Real World -- this book could be enough to send a nervous college grad into a deep depression.

The only reason I started reading this book was because of the title -- and the only reason I continued to read it was because I was so fascinated by how incredibly offensive it was.

During these experiences, I, and several of my professional associates, have noted that OTDR testing and interpretation are the two aspects of installation that cause the most difficulty to the largest number of novice installers. This book is designed to reduce such difficulty significantly! With diligence, this book helps you eliminate this difficulty completely! My strategy is ‘divide and conquer’. This book divides the essential knowledge and understanding into five, clearly written, concise, yet comprehensive chapters. About the Author
For the last 34 years Mr. Eric R. Pearson has worked in fiber optic communications. This involvement includes a wide variety of activities, including manufacturing management, business management, field installation, training, and technical consulting. Mr. Pearson has delivered 507 training presentations and trained more than 8400 personnel in proper installation and design methods. This experience includes making and supervising more than 21,000 OTDR traces. Mr. Pearson has performed more than forty thousand OTDR, ORL, insertion loss, and dispersion tests on both multimode and singlemode cables. Mr. Pearson written four comprehensive texts on fiber installation, The Complete Guide to Fiber Optic Cable Installation (Delmar Publishers, 1997), Successful Fiber Optic Installation- The Essentials (2005), Professional Fiber Optic Installation, The Essentials For Success (2011, ISBN 9780976975434) and Mastering The OTDR [2011]. Since 1999, Mr. Pearson has been a Master Instructor for the Building Industry Consultants Services International (BICSI), and the developer of the BICSI fiber optic network design program, FO110. Even though I didn't follow the book's plan exactly, I'm married with a child and a full time job so I couldn't, it still worked for me but it did take longer than 30 days. I used what I learned from this book to bypass going to bartender school and went right into a barback position and later becoming a bartender at a golf country club working banquets, weddings, and parties.

Let me first say this: getting my first job bartending was NOT easy and took longer than I ever imaged! I used indeed.com, craig's list, etc. to send literally dozens of resumes with no responses. I even went to bars and restaurants and left my resume and still got nowhere. Finally I got an interview from an online application and convinced the manager into letting me barback with little restaurant experience (years back I worked for a catering company and I padded my resume a little, which I highly suggest). It was a tough job, didn't pay great, and I worked late nights, but what I learned made it worth while and prepared me for the country club bartender position, which I found online soon afterwards.

What I liked best about this book: it is entertaining, is a hell of a motivator, and has great sections on preparing for interviews and writing resumes (whether you've trying to get bartender job or any other job for that matter), drink recipes, and what to expect when you are actually behind the bar. I've actually used this book while on the job when someone ordered a drink I'm not familiar with and I discretely checked the drink recipes on my iPhone.

I had some questions and emailed the author and he actually wrote me back! I know it doesn't seem like much, but I was really floored that he took the time and interest in me. His advise and encouragement was much appreciated.

Some things I'd like to see in the book (and although the author is right that you can watch videos on youtube but there are a lot of contradicting ones): how to pour a draft beer (including Guinness), how to change a beer keg, how to cut fruit and make a twist, an basic overview of POS systems, and to remember to always put down a beverage napkin to welcome a customer to the bar. I would also like to see measurements for drink mixers in the recipes (how much ounces for juices, sweet & sour, etc.) By the way, for youtube I suggest searching Basics Of Bartending - Instructional Bartending Video For Beginners.

With the information from this book, a little luck, and a lot of tenacity, I landed a pretty nice gig and I'm in a great position to get other bartender positions now that I am a professional bartender. If you're serious about becoming a bartender, read this book!

Takes All the Guesswork Out

They say it takes 10,000 hours at anything to truly become a master, and it's clear Dave has put his time in and knows his craft like a Sensei. Now he's handing all that knowhow and wisdom to his readers like a passcode, offering a way to cut to the front of the hiring line. I bartended a little in the past, and if I'd had Dave's book at my fingertips, I'd never have left for the years of money-sucking university training and the shrinking "professional" sector, and would be hell of a lot better off financially. Glad to know it's not too late. Bartending is the most recession-proof job out there. The tougher things get, the more people drink. The job pays decently, will never be outsourced, and doesn't require a backbreaking college loan to become eligible. That said, Dave's book really should be priced more like a textbook--if textbooks were ever this droll, clever and eminently useful.

This book is a gift to anyone with a little initiative and sense of adventure, and who knows where the job security is. It's also a gift to anyone who enjoys fine writing like a crisp, dry Cabernet. I'd say "They should have sent a poet" but apparently they did. It seems bartending leaves time for other talents as well.

This book is amazing. With this book and a little practice at home you won't need to spend hundreds on a bartending class. Very detailed and helpful. I got an interview a few days after I finished the book, didn't get the job but the advice Dave gives you works. I recommend it anyone looking to become a bartender.

About the Author
Christoph Schreuer is a graduate of the Universities of Vienna, Cambridge and Yale. Over an academic career spanning more than forty years, he has published numerous articles and several books in the field of international law. He has covered such diverse areas as human rights, adjudication by national and international courts and tribunals, sovereign immunity, the law of international organizations, the sources of international law and the future of sovereignty.

Loretta Malintoppi is Of Counsel with the Paris Office of Eversheds LLP. She has a law degree from Rome University, holds an LLM in Common Law Studies from Georgetown University Law Center and specialises in public international law and international arbitration, including investment arbitration and State-to-State disputes.

August Reinisch is Professor of International and European Law at the University of Vienna, Professorial Lecturer at the Bologna Center of SAIS/Johns Hopkins University and Director of the LL.M. Program in International Legal Studies at the University of Vienna.

Anthony Sinclair is a member of the London-based International Arbitration Group of Allen & Overy LLP, where he specialises in public international law and international arbitration.
