Who doesn't love HOLLYWOOD MUSICALS - Every page is MAGICAL - 5 STARS !!!!
By Richard of Connecticut
Every major Hollywood musical is in this book. There are dozens of performers with pictures to boot. Composers are on every page, and writers, and designers. Each film is presented over several pages, and the pictures are fantastic. The author uses a very distinctive template so you know what to expect for each musical. With every story you are going to see the following:
* A plot synopsis
* The Cast
* Song lists
* Production details
* Behind the scenes anecdotes
* Quotations
It's the photography that is very special in this book. There are color photographs and black and whites as well. You will see production stills, and off camera shots that are intriguing. Each musical also has the original film poster that was associated with the show.
Among the more than 100 musicals that are portrayed in this book are:
* An American in Paris
* The Music Man
* My Fair Lady
* Oklahoma
* Singin' in the Rain
* The Sound of Music
CONCLUSION:
I bought the book for my former wife who runs a theatre school, and then I started to look through it before I gave it to her. I wound up reading the whole book. It was that enthralling. I don't think it is possible to just glance at Hollywood Musicals. Once you pick it up and open it, you get hooked. Then you start looking for your favorites, and you get hooked even more. I guess I'm going to have to get my own copy and thank you for reading this review.

Could have been so much more.

I am a huge fan of the Broadway counterpart to this book, 101 Greatest Broadway Musicals. Not only did it have interesting tidbits on many of my favorite shows, the book introduced me to many other amazing shows that I may have never encountered otherwise. Add incredible snapshots from performances, promos, and backstage, and you have yourself an incredible book.
With his book on Hollywood Musicals, his efforts fall short in several ways. First, I will not complain about the list. As with any book of this nature, readers will balk at certain inclusions and lament at particular omissions. One reviewer complains about the inclusion of "High School Musical 3," but I think the written explanation was quite insightful and made a fair argument as to its merits. My biggest problem with the book stems from the written segments of other, more obvious choices.
Bloom's expertise obviously lies with Broadway musicals. Perhaps because of this, his bias also tends to favor them over their Hollywood treatments. While I think this sentiment is justified in many instances, he expresses his displeasure with particular films so much that he makes you wonder why he ever included them in his book. Take, for instance, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Instead of giving a history of the transfer from stage to film, commenting at all on the casting, or even mentioning Monroe's iconic take on a classic song, he dedicates two pages to ranting about the injustices particular composers felt when their scores were cut and altered for film. While I can see him dedicating a separate section to this diatribe (much like he did in the Broadway version when he examined flops, Off-Broadway, and film stars on stage), I feel as though he missed out on an opportunity to comment on what has become a classic movie musical. I, for one, prefer the movie version to the stage production, and I don't think I would be far off in saying that the movie has meant more to many readers than the Broadway show ever did. I'm not asking him to like it, but at least humor those of us that do and acknowledge its place in cinema history.
"Damn Yankees" gets a similar treatment, as well as many of the other stage-film transfers. Also, the pictures are less impressive than those found in the Broadway book, but that is to be expected, as screenshots don't always have the best quality. Overall, the book has a very unfortunate hypercritical tone that I feel as though may not be appreciated by those readers who have a general affinity for movie musicals. It's very interesting considering these are supposed to represent the 101 GREATEST song and dance films. All of that being said, the book did maintain my interest enough for me to not regret my purchase. I guess I just expected so much more.

Perfect for Fans and Casual Readers alike

A really fascinating look at movie musicals: Smart, witty and, most of all, a wonderful valentine to the great movie musicals. Especially worthwhile are the great photos - color and black and white - so many of which I'm sure have never seen before (for example: a shot of Esther Williams filming underwater inside a tank with cameramen in Speedos. What a hoot.) Not all the author's choices are the same as mine, but in his introduction Mr. Bloom I think helpfully explains how and why he opted to include the films he did. Obviously, if the book were simply about the "Best" movie musicals ever made, there might be more featuring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and those from MGM Studios. But "Greatest" means films that are memorable for all kinds of reasons and I believe that's why the book includes genres like rock musicals, beach musicals, singing cowboy films etc... After all, a Roy Rogers movie gives as much pleasure to some fans as Singin' in the Rain gives to others. In other words - this is really a book that has something for everyone. Highly recommended.
