About the Author
Dr. Julie Knapp, Ph.D., BCBA-D is a Pediatric Neuropsychologist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctorate. She is Executive Director of the Knapp Center for Childhood Development located in Boardman, OH, which specializes in the diagnosis, neuropsychological assessment and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Knapp offers an International ABA Program assisting families from other parts of the world to travel to the US for ABA therapy. She offers remote training and supervision on ABA programs through a HIPPA secure website to families across the world who otherwise cannot find local ABA therapy or who want expert advice on their program. Dr. Knapp is also a Consultant at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital and holds an appointment at Case Western Reserve University. Carolline Turnbull, BA, BCaBA is a Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst at KidsLink Neurobehavioral Center in Twinsburg, OH. Carolline is a behavior consultant for home and school-based consultation, and developed a dance class for children ages 3-6 with varying disabilities and their neurotypical peers. She completed her Bachelor's degree in speech pathology and audiology at Kent State University and her course work for her BCaBA at Florida Institute of Technology. Carolline has worked in the area of behavioral management of children and young adults with developmental disabilities for 15 years.

Not great

I am a new SLP (please keep that in mind when reading this review) and have had experience using the book A Work in Progress in my internship, which is an excellent book for writing ABA programs for communication skills. For every skill, A Work in Progress provides the reasons for targeting the skill, how to do it, why it's important (very nice to have for when you have to talk to parents), prompting and prompt fading, any skills that are prerequisite, and many ideas for activities. I was hoping that A Complete ABA Curriculum would be something similar but with more advanced skills.
A Complete ABA Curriculum is an enormous book, but they easily could have saved the paper and made it about five times smaller, as the majority of the pages are repeats of essentially the same data sheet for every program. To me, the ways it recommends targeting skills embody the negative stereotype of ABA. That is, it recommends tasks that are, in most instances, totally rote and not functional. For example, for teaching the "real vs. make believe" concept, they recommend printing out pictures of real and make believe people/animals/etc. and having the student sort them into piles. The book provides "examples of prerequisite skills" for some programs, not all. They have "suggested targets" for their programs but they do not list any additional teaching activities or reasoning behind why the skills are important. I was disappointed in the receptive and expressive language skills programs, although I did not look at other programs. Maybe BCBAs or other professionals would view it differently.

Down to earth ABA curriculum

Lucky for us to have these books. Its easy to adopt and implement in our homebase therapy for our autistic kid. Big thanks for Julie Knapp and teams that make it 'down to earth' ABA curriculum in these books..Even for beginner parents that starting to apply ABA
