John Chapman, fourth abbot of Downside Abbey, was a renowned scholar of the early Church. Taking up the question of the papacy in the first centuries of Christianity, he eschews selective apologetics in favor of a reasoned study of textual sources in the context of historical events. By these he illustrates the position of the bishop of Rome in the early Church through the prominent and authoritative role taken by or expected of him at pivotal moments of early Christian history. So doing, this volume offers much substance to those who wish to understand better the question of papal prerogatives. Chapman argues in favor of the Catholic claims based on his reading of the history, but does so with such care as a historian that his work has received high approval even from such an eminence as the famed Anglican historian Henry Chadwick who, in his own book on the history of the early Church, saw fit to recommend Chapman’s work to readers interested in the question. There have been many successors to Chapman but few, if any, have engaged precisely with the matters that he discusses with such detail and clarity. His book, therefore, remains an important voice in the modern conversation.

an indispensable resource on the early papacy
By KBD
Of all of the books published in recent years on the history of the early papacy, I believe that this is the best. Chapman's goal in these chapters is to write a history of the papacy that takes into account the "shape" of the data. Chapman is deeply aware of the fact that different pieces of evidence have different levels of clarity and differ in their direct applicability to any given historical question. As a result, the historian must be careful to let the clear interpret the unclear. Chapman is almost alone in taking this lesson to heart, and the result is a deeply contextualized, subtle, and rich history. Let me give several examples below.
(1) Compare Chapman's analysis of Augustine's views on the papacy with that of Klaus Schatz. Schatz tries to use a close reading of one letter from Augustine to argue that Augustine disagreed with the papal prerogatives which Pope Innocent claimed for himself during the Pelagian controversy. Unfortunately for Schatz, the one letter he chose to analyze did not directly relate to Augustine's views on papal authority, and so it is inherently an unclear piece of evidence about that question. Chapman, on the other hand, steps right to the point, and brings forth Augustine's letter 186, in which he explicitly addresses Pope Innocent's claims to authority, and explicitly commends them. Chapman searches for the clear evidence, and he lets the clear interpret the unclear.
(2) Related to the first point, Chapman therefore goes to much greater lengths to survey the whole scope of the evidence, to ensure that his evaluations are based on the clearest and most complete evidence and not limited by only marginally related pieces of evidence or small sample sizes. In particular, Chapman shares this survey with us, by incorporating into his historical narratives the most complete and detailed set of primary source quotations I have seen in any work on the early papacy.
(3) Almost alone among historians of this era, he is aware that the amount of manuscript evidence that has survived to the present varies greatly from era to era within the Church's first 500 years. As a result, he eschews overly confident conclusions about how the papacy changed during its first 400 years, since the sample size of early data is too small to make firm conclusions about such a question.
Finally, the work is readable, clear, and interesting. Chapman writes beautifully, and does his utmost to maintain the reader's interest in the flow of the argument. I can't recommend this book enough.

This is a reprint of an older book and reproduced well. Such is not always the case with reprints, but is with this one.

Simply a great read. However, it should be read with other historical books on the same subject.
