One of the Poorest Written Books I've Read this Year. (D- Grade)

You would think with an appealing cover and equally appealing blurb, that the book itself would be well written. I'm sorry to say that Something More is a horribly written book. It's apparent no professional editing or copy editing has been done. I noticed this within the first few pages. The heroine is supposed to be an 18 year old college freshman, but she acts more like a 13 year old, whining brat with a personality of a wet noodle.
There's also non-stop info dumping and internal musings that need to go. There are multiple words used time and again and many instances of convoluted statements and made up words. And example is this statement that I had to re-read a few times to understand:
"Hiya, Nyla, the ussh?"
What in the world is a "ussh?" I assume it means the usual, but come on! If a word is invented but never explained, how would the reader know what it means?
But my favorite is: "He couldn't resist smearing his kisses all over her breasts, and her stomach." Smearing like butter or jam on toast? What?? How do you smear kisses? That's unbelievably not sexy or romantic and a fail as a writer.
Nyla, our heroine is so Mary Sue and naive. Also her so-called high school bully and eventual love interest, Jamison is full of contradictions. One minute he's an egotistical, mean snob who treated Nyla horrible in high school, but then they were really frenemies but then friends. So much confusions and back and forth wishy-washiness on this relationship.
This was written more like a first draft, and even then it should have been revised multiple times and edited before it was suited for publication. It's insulting to your readers, regardless if you're self published, not to have a professional editor. Expect a horrible review like this one I've given, not to be mean, but a wake up call to treat your writing as a profession, especially if you're playing in the big leagues and publishing your work.

That was my involuntary reaction after agreeing to read Mia Castile's YA "Romance", `Something More'.
"How do I keep getting myself into these things?" I asked myself, sighing dramatically.
I had never read anything by Mia Castile before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. She seemed to have a good reputation as a writer, and...you know...she is a Hoosier!
Knowing that I didn't fall within her target market, I nonetheless dove into the story, hoping my manliness wouldn't get too diluted.
Then something amazing happened!
I really liked the story! (You know....besides the romantic stuff *)
But seriously, I found Something More to be a well crafted and interesting story. Mia Castile's writing style is both fluid and thorough, and you will find her characters both intriguing and realistic.
You feel the emotions of Nyla's angst as she fights falling in love, and Jameson's cockiness as he confidently woos her.
Personally, I fell in love with Nyla...ummm...you know....in a manly way.
I am totally impressed with Mia Castile and her story.
I would totally recommend this book to anyone that wants an intriguing and well written YA romance!
(* ~ Men...I have heard that the female of our species really likes this....a lot!)

Not at all believable.

I bought this book based on the really great cover and the plot blurb.
Sadly the cover was the best part of the book.
I had a really hard time with this book. First of all, the stuff that Jamison did to Nyla (I hate that name) in school went beyond the kind of teasing a boy does to a girl he likes. What he did was bullying, plain and simple. The things he did were mean and vindictive. I have a hard time thinking that any self respecting young woman would be able to get past the things he did and want to be with him. I was annoyed at the way the book jumped around trying to justify the things he did. And even in the present day Jamison is not a likeable character. He is manipulative to both Nyla and Ethan. He jumps around from being a sad misunderstood guy who is trying to change, to a complete jerk. He was not at all likeable.
And Nyla...I would have bought her character as a high school girl. I had a harder time thinking of her being in college. She was bland. I hated the way she treated Ethan, who was a lot more likeable than Jamison.
I had a hard time believing that Nyla loved Jamison. It felt like she went from despising him to loving him all at once. I'm okay with a little suspension of disbelief, but their romance seemed forced. The book dragged a little too much for my taste. I found I was forcing myself not to skip ahead. For a short book it took me a long time to read because it just didn't hold my interest.
I think the author had a good idea for a story, but it needed more polishing. And a more likeable hero.
