About the Author
Phil Metzger has been painting and selling his artwork for over 30 years. His work is included in thousands of private and public collections and has earned him honors in national and regional exhibitions. He teaches watercolor and perspective drawing, and has written many popular North Light Books, including "Perspective Without Pain", "Pencil Magic", "Watercolor Basics: Perspective Secrets", "The North Light Artist's Guide to Materials and Techniques", and "The Artist's Illustrated Encyclopedia".

The BEST text on perspective for the beginner ... period.

I'm trying to return to drawing and (eventually) painting after not so much as picking up a pencil in 12 or 13 years. When I started, I read every review of every book I could find on the different subjects (basic 'seeing', basic drawing, landscapes, figure drawing, portraits, and perspective) and browsed libraries in five different counties here in NC. The list I came up with for basic texts in each subject area included 'Perspective Without Pain' and I have not been disappointed. For a relative beginner, this book is the most user-friendly manual out there in which all aspects of classic perspective is covered. What makes it especially awesome is actual user exercises to reinforce what you read. I absolutely HAVE TO HAVE exercises along with text (I'm not the brightest light in the hallway) and this book includes excellent reinforcing material. If you can find this in a library, take a quick look before you buy. For us beginners it is, in my humble opinion, perfect.

Perspective book written predominantly for artists...

This book was written with the express purpose of instructing the artist about the concepts of perspective. I've yet to encounter any object (apart from some lines for illustrative purposes, such as those leading into the vanishing points) that wasn't drawn in freehand. It seems that eyeballing (ie. approximating and estimating) the perspective applications, are the order of the day.
Like its namesake, it lives up to it by taking the reader step-by-step into the fundamental and intermediate aspects of perspecting drawing in regards to landscape and interior drawings (although this would, of course, apply to other perspective related instances). As such, it is one of my favourite books on the subject matter.
Highly recommended for artists, although engineers and architects might look elsewhere for more precise methods than those employed in the book.

Fantastic guide to one of the toughest problems for artists

As a beginning artist this book was heaven sent. One of the toughest things to learn is how to draw to make things appear to have perspective and this book takes you through a step by step process geared toward all levels of drawing. The beginner is comfortable right away with this daunting subject and the advanced student hones his skills through the study of the later chapters. It is a must for the beginner and the advanced artist alike.

About the Author
Originally from Houston, Texas, Gwendolyn Womack began writing plays in college while freezing in the tundra at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She received an MFA from CalArts in Directing for theater and film and was a semi-finalist in the Academy's Nicholl Fellowship. A fun concept that doesn't pan out

Bryan Pierce is an unconventional artist in Boston. He is successful, and his art sells well, but that is not why he paints. His paintings are memories. Since he was a kid, he’s been having vivid dreams (visions?). In each dream, he is a different person from the past (Alexander Pushkin in 1837, Lord Asano in the Province of Ako, Japan, in 1701, a Viking named Bjarni in Iceland in 986, etc.). The dreams allow him to see the moments in each person’s life that were the greatest struggles and the greatest joys; often he experiences their deaths. When he awakens from these visions, he retains these people’s memories, their talents, and their languages. He immediately creates a painting to memorialize what he has seen and experienced.

When he was a teenager, his parents sought to help him in any way they could. He was repeatedly sent to mental institutions for evaluation and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Because the visions caused him nothing but pain, he used to keep his paintings private. Now, however, he shows his work in galleries for a very distinct purpose: “He put his work out there with the hope that someone, someday, would recognize his paintings for what they were, that someone else in the world suffered from the same curse.”

One day, he decides to try to clear his mind by visiting an exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts called “Mysteries of Egypt and The Great Pyramid.” There, he sees a woman with whom he feels an instant connection. He follows her to Harvard Square, where they play a few games of flirtatious chess without ever learning each other’s names. Later that same night, she serendipitously attends the opening of Bryan’s new show (coincidentally, his work is being shown at her best friends’ new gallery). At the show, she sees a painting of the recurring dream that she has had since she was a child. Quickly, Bryan and the mystery woman realize that their connection may be much deeper than they originally presumed.

I wanted to like this book, but there are too many reasons not to.

The book’s pacing is totally inconsistent. The first quarter of the book is interesting and engaging—it coasts on concept (which is creative and fun and full of possibility) and reads pretty quickly. But then the book loses momentum and stalls out. The middle two hundred pages are repetitive and slow. We are introduced to more and more of Bryan’s dream lives without any movement toward a connection/conclusion. And then, all of a sudden, the last fifty pages rush to reach a conclusion. The book as a whole feels disjointed and messy. And, as I’ve mentioned before, books that start off strong and end up terrible are the worst kind–they leave me feeling swindled.

When balanced against the fun concept and decent beginning, inconsistent pacing, repetition, and a rushed ending wouldn’t be enough to give this book such a low rating. But these attributes put it squarely in the 2/5 zone:

-- The moments that aim to be emotionally evocative come off as cheesy and silly;
-- There is an utterly predictable (and painfully stupid) twist toward the end; and
-- The book sets itself up in a very obvious manner for a sequel (which means, of course, that there isn’t a satisfying ending).

I wish this book had lived up to its potential, but it didn’t.

Unique Thriller

I was completely absorbed by The Memory Painter by Gwendolyn Womack. Last week was unusually busy and I had much less time to read but I couldn't wait to sneak a moment here and there to find out what was happening to Bryan and Linz as they journeyed through their memories.

The plot moves along quickly and is very intriguing. There are twists to keep the reader guessing. It's just such a unique premise that I was simply mesmerized. I love when books shock me with the sheer genius of the idea--like The Time Traveler's Wife or Life After Life.

Character development becomes key as Bryan and Linz realize some of the character traits come from past lives and some are all their own. Each person in the story is an individual, yet also a combination of all their previous lives, remembered and not remembered. Womack excels at making the reader believe that her characters had lived thousands of lives before.

The Memory Painter isn't bound by any one genre and that makes it exciting. With elements of a thriller, historical fiction, science fiction and some romance, Womack's novel is sure to appeal to everyone. I appreciated that the novel was also clean enough to be able to recommend it to all my friends. In fact, it's the book I'll be pushing on my friends this summer.

Just in Time for a Good Vacation read!

This is a great "Summer Reading" book. A fairly interesting premise, is that a pharmaceutical research company is exploring a drug to recover Alzheimer's sufferers' memories. However the patients in the control group were never a part of the pool of characters, and the focus was always on the researchers themselves as they sampled their "miracle" cure over many years. The net result was a lengthy excursion into the many incarnations they stumbled into over uncounted centuries and numerous cultures. And of course, the researchers were all experiencing the SAME past lives and memories. Additionally, all the emerging past lives consistently were limited to the powerful, famous, or artistic persons in history. This group of "scientists" never dredged up the memories and experiences of ordinary people.

This provides an entertaining story, but the characters are generally predictable in all their actions, and attitudes. Nevertheless, I stuck with the novel and finished it in two days. This in turn contributed to one of the most striking features of modern Spanish political and cultural life--the absence of a strong sense of Spanish, as opposed to local or regional, identity. Scholars with interests in modern European cultural politics, processes of state consolidation, nationalism, and the history of education will find this book essential reading.

Italian Honeymoon

Recently my wife and I were planning a two week, once in a lifetime trip though Italy. We were very excited to see the entire country but realized that communicating might be difficult as we got into the Tuscan countryside. With this in mind we picked up a copy of Instant Italian Vocabulary Builder.
Although my wife and I had a bit of Spanish and Italian while in college, we didn't retain nearly enough of the language and its structure to feel comfortable on our trip. We each spent some of our free time reading though this book and were simply amazed at how much we retained. This method of learning worked wonders for the both of us and we commented to each other on our trip that we feel we learned more in the short time spent with this book than in our entire college experience.
This level of comfort with the language helped make our honeymoon a truly unforgettable experience. It allowed us to put our concerns aside and to enjoy our time in the Tuscan wine country. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast and easy way to pick up the Italian language. Simply the best learning tool I've used while studying a foreign language.

Miraculous!!

I never thought it could be that easy. I have tried classes and and other textbooks in the past. Tom has really discovered a way for people who find learning languages challenging, such as myself, to really connect and understand how words and sentances are formed in the Italian language. It not only helps people to understand what is being said, but more importantly enables people to interact in a full on conversation. It has really given me hope from the several years of discouragement I have had trying other teacher's methods.
I highly recommend anyone who needs and/or wants to learn or expand thier knowledge of foriegn language to order this version.
It is easy and understandable for all levels. The most effective method I have ever read.

Don't buy this book

I don't often write reviews, but I had to this time. The book in question is pretty worthless. I was very disappointed. In fact I will never buy a book from this series again. Basically, it is a list of words in Italian that are almost the exact same as what the word would be in English but with different suffixes. For example, the english version is important but the Italian version is importante. The English version is incredible the Italian version incredibile. In other words you can guess what the word means anyway. Don't buy the book. If I could have given it a quarter star I would have.

Waiting for the next amazing book!

Cash, then Stefan and now Kane. Kane and Abbi.. can two broken people find love and have an HEA? They can if they can break through the walls that are holding them back. I think Kane is my favorite so far and I am excited to read Satisfation when it is released. Thank you KM Scott for sharing their stories with us and sucking me into the story with them. I feel every heartache, every happiness and every anxious moment they do.

Scott I couldn't believe you left me hanging at the end like that..... my heart broke in half for kane and Abby..... both of f them are so broken but they found love in each other..... I don't I can wait for book 4

Drama and heartache-ville!

I could not put this book down! Kane is awesome, though haunted. Abbi is sweet but needs to start making better decisions (so does Kane). Both of these people could use ongoing therapy! I was not prepared for how the book ended. I'm not sure I can stand the suspense! Dual POV. I liked how Cash, Olivia and Stefan played supportive roles and I hope for the best for all the brothers! Of the 3 brothers, Kane really deserves a HEA!
