Life Lessons Wrapped in Suspenseful Plot Devices For Effect

"Wow!" can't expressed it all.

I bought the book as soon as I saw the email announcing its availability close to midnight last night. I initially planned to simply do a quick overview of the book and planned to read it leisurely all day Sunday. The next thing I knew, it was 6am and I was up all night reading it and had to take a break and eat my breakfast and take a shot of 5-hour energy drink to keep me up for the rest of the day.

The book is a compendium of life lessons wrapped in suspenseful plots and twists and turns for effect. One that I could totally relate to are the "releasing" object lessons in the book. It works, totally!

....One of my favorite scenes (A conversation between Ian Fleming and Penelope Spence):
.......Ian: Don't make life more complicated than it needs to be.
.......Penelope: (with a sigh) That sounds pretty simple. How do I do that?
.......Ian: Release all the stuff you don't need.
.......Penelope: How do I tell what I need and what I don't need?
.......Ian: Release everything and the important stuff will come back.

My reaction to the scene: Yeah, scary at first, but it's true! (But you got to release the "fear" as well.) Maybe not as dramatic (but it could be) as the scenes in the book, but it is so true.

A side note: I thought that having a Russian company as a major shareholder of Boeing Sea Launch was just an imaginary plot device... not until I Googled "Boeing Sea Launch". Indeed, a Moscow-based company, "Rocket & Space Corp. Energia", is a major shareholder (85% stake) that saved the company from bankruptcy. The things you learn from works of fiction!

I am so looking forward to the next installment of "The Fourth Awakening Series".

I had been waiting for this book for just over a year now and it did not disappoint at all!!! This book is about new age thinking and how thoughts actually carry a weight in the world we live in but presents it in a story that is exhilarating. This same new age thinking can be seen in the Celestine Prophecy series. I do not think I put down my kindle reader down since I got this book until I finished it. It is a truly amazing story with many things to think about after you are done. If this was in paperback, it would be falling apart by next year because I would have re-read it so many times. Thank you so much Rod!!!

Maathai, a 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, presents a matter-of-fact account of her rather exceptional life in Kenya. Born in 1940, Matthai attended primary school at a time when Kenyan girls were not educated; went on to earn a Ph.D. and became head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Nairobi before founding Kenya's Green Belt Movement in 1977, which mobilized thousands of women to plant trees in an effort to restore the country's indigenous forests. Because Kenya's environmental degradation was largely due to the policies of a corrupt government, she then made the Green Belt Movement part of a broader campaign for democracy. Maathai endured personal attacks by the ruling powers-President Moi denounced her as a "wayward" woman-and engaged in political activities that landed her in jail several times. When a new government came into power in 2002, she was elected to Parliament and appointed assistant minister in the Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources. Inspiring but sometimes contradictory

I enjoyed reading Wangari Maathai's memoir, especially her childhood, and journey to early adulthood, and the final years of her work after she won the Nobel Prize. Her struggle to protect Kenyan forests and promote women's rights and advocate for environmental protection through the Green Belt Movement, especially under a repressive government regime, is admirable and inspiring.

Two things I struggled with as I read about her work with the Green Belt Movement are her tendencies to belittle Kenyans and portray herself as an absolute victim.

Because of her work, Maathai was constantly harassed by local government authorities. During these moments, she would appeal to her international networks of friends and colleagues to encourage the Kenyan Government to put the environment before destructive developmental projects, arguing that Kenyans are too busy trying to earn a living, or not as aware of environmental conservation as people in the West are. This is a contradiction with what she claims several times about generations past who had systems of protecting the environment. She even demonstrates it through stories about growing up amongst lush rivers and forested areas in the forties and fifties.

Finally, in the face of constant adversity, it may be inevitable to take the tone of a victim, constantly attacking the mechanisms and institutions that prevent one from doing their work. Maathai falls into this trap, which diminishes her heroism and struggle. As a woman who achieved such prominence, she could have held her head up a little higher, especially in her lucid writing, to give a more powerful account of the years she spent building the Green Belt Movement.

One of my heroes

One of my heroes! Kenya's Wangari Maathai was the first African woman and first environmentalist to win the Nobel peace prize; she was also a fearless activist for democracy, women's rights, and sustainable development, and a brilliant story teller, too! I used the book in a number of college courses, to great avail. Many students found her story inspirational, unique and clearly told.

Great Biography

I read a copy and then bought several to give to friends. Wangari is an incredible woman who starts by giving a good background on the effects of colonialization of Africa socially, politically and environmentally. As a founder of the Green Belt Movement she has been through incredible things, sometimes horrific in nature, yet she has the ability to step back and analyze the events so well. No wonder she won a Noble Prize. This book should be required reading.

Five Minutes a Day for Your Well-Being

Oil pulling is very easy to perform. You can do it at any time without any special knowledge or preparation. All that you need is five minutes of your time. And whether you realize it or not, it will be time well spent.

Once Daily: Your Cure

Despite the simplicity of oil pulling, it’s good to follow the step-by-step procedure outlined below. Otherwise, small mistakes can slip in, which can detract from the success of your efforts.

The Best Time
In principle, one can use oil pulling at any time. Nevertheless, mornings, just after waking up, are generally the best time for it because many waste products, toxins, and impurities settle in our oral mucosa during the night. In the morning, these can be disposed of with one “sip” of oil.

Don’t drink coffee, juice, or even water before oil pulling. Any liquid that you swallow will wash a good portion of what you want to expel back into your body. When you enter your bathroom in the morning do the oil pulling before you put anything else into your mouth. In certain cases, such as persistent chronic illnesses and in order to speed up healing processes, one can also use this cure three times daily. Just as in the morning, it is important to do it before a meal.

To begin, place a spoonful of oil in your mouth. One full tablespoon is best. If this is too much, start with a teaspoon--but nothing less. From this amount, you can gradually work up to one tablespoon. The larger amount is better because it allows the full effects of oil pulling to develop. One teaspoon is enough for children older than six years.

Pull and Swish Vigorously
Sip the oil from a spoon. As soon as it is fully in the mouth, you need to keep the oil moving: suck it through your teeth, chew it, and swish it around in your mouth. This should occur in a leisurely fashion, without stress or strain. If you are stressed, you lose a large portion of oil pulling’s effectiveness.

Do not be surprised when the consistency of the oil changes in your mouth during oil pulling; that it becomes continuously thinner is dependent on it combining with saliva. The foamy mixture that slowly develops is completely normal and desirable.

Do Not Swallow
During oil pulling, always hold your head upright or, better yet, inclined forward. Absolutely avoid leaning your head back, as when gargling. By leaning back you risk swallowing some of the oil. This should be strictly avoided--you ultimately want to expel, not consume, the toxins that have bound themselves to the oil. But in case some of it goes down your throat, it’s nothing to worry about. You will not gain any new toxins. The toxins and waste products found in the swallowed mixture will reach the digestive tract and be transported back into the bloodstream from the small intestine. They can be disposed of during the next oil pulling session.

Away with the Toxins
Oil pulling should be performed for a duration of five minutes. When you spit it out, the oil should be milky white or at least pale yellow. If it is still yellow-green, the duration was too short. After spitting out the oil, rinse your mouth with warm water a few times. Finally, brush your teeth with a toothbrush as usual. It is frequently advised that the oil should be spat into the toilet bowl, because it is the usual repository for bodily waste. You can spit the oil into the sink as well. You should then quickly clean it, since the discarded fluid contains a multitude of toxins.

Duration of the Oil Pulling Cure
To truly realize a noticeable effect one needs to perform oil pulling daily for at least one week. It generally takes four to six weeks before the full effects of oil pulling can be seen and can have a positive impact on all levels. It is therefore useful to complete an oil pulling treatment for approximately six weeks during the early spring and fall. However, this does not mean that oil pulling should not be done daily. Many people who have done this for years swear by it.

Chronic illnesses, from which one has suffered for a long period of time, require more patience. Ultimately, long-term health problems cannot be cured from one day to the next--oil pulling cannot do that. During the treatment of chronic illnesses with oil pulling, it can sometimes take a year for full relief or healing to set in.

As a rule of thumb, the following signs show how long you need to carry out the oil pulling cure: You should be able to sleep well and have a good appetite. When you wake up in the morning you should feel rested and refreshed and your eyes should be free of “sand.” Keep up the oil pulling until you reach these benchmarks.

You Might Feel Worse at First
Immediately after starting oil pulling, a cleansing crisis can occur. You may experience deterioration in your current condition or worsening of the symptoms of an existing ailment. This should be seen as a positive sign. The initial and temporary deterioration shows that the detoxification process has begun in the body. This initial worsening is certainly not a reason for worry and should not lead you to stop the practice; on the contrary, the initial decline shows that you are on the right track.

Possible Temporary Ailments

When the detoxification gets underway and the body can finally rid itself of harmful contaminants, the following ailments sometimes occur on a temporary basis.

Fever
Joint pain or stiffness
Sore throat
Swollen lymph nodes
Slight flu symptoms
Digestion problems, such as constipation or diarrhea

Plus, the final third of the book is taken up with other ways to boost your immune system including healthy eating and other natural detoxification techniques. I found this part of the book to be incongruous to the oil pulling information and often the author contradicted her own advice. This part of the book felt like a filler thrown in to make the book a little bit longer. The book would have been much stronger without it.

CONCLUSION: Birgit Frohn has her own method of how to complete oil pulling that differs a bit from others. This is why I read more than one book on the subject to get different views and to decide for myself what would work the best for me. This book is good if you are looking for how to do oil pulling rather than the reasons why oil pulling works. I recommend it for the oil pulling information only which includes when to pull, how to pull and what to expect. Does oil pulling work? I have been doing it for two weeks with a good quality oil and have already seen some major results in muscle and digestive relaxation as well as more energy during the day. I am beginning to feel much less sensitivity in my gums and teeth. But I think two weeks is too little of time to make a firm decision so I will keep at it a while longer. If nothing else, my jaw muscles are becoming much stronger from the daily swishing!

The Oil Pulling Miracle is all about how to use oils to help with your health. It has a detailed explanation on how to oil pull and for how you need to do it for. It also has a detailed guide on which oils work the best for different situations and a detox guide as well.

I found this book to be highly detailed of all the oils you can use to better yourself and get those toxins out of your system. I like books like this that have a simpler way of doing things instead of going to the doctor and getting drugs that might not work, when a little oil pulling might keep you from going to the doctor in the first place.

While The Oil Pulling Miracle by Birgit Frohn gives a decent introduction to oil pulling, covering the steps and the various oils that can be used for this purpose, I didn't find many scientific references, and the last half of the book was filled with non-scientific detox methods without any kind of references.
