The title might be a little insulting but it works.

This book assumes you know little to nothing about computers. It will take you from ground zero to a functional user. The scope is well within the default software that comes with Microsoft systems. There are plenty of color pictures diagrams and explanations of how and why.

The only thing that you need to be aware of as with all computer books is the technology changes so the speed of processors and the size of drives may change before you get this book.

Some books claim that they are in plain English this one is. It uses the margin gimmick to tell you what hot tips are don't forget tips and beware warnings. You don't need the margins but they're comforting to have in the book.

The book is well designed be able to those step-by-step from front to back however if you need a little extra help or think you have missed something there is an index in the back that will carry you back to that particular location.

I suggest that even if you do know how to use computers that this book may tell you how to use computers more efficiently or clear up anything that you might have a misconception about.

So don't let the title or the sophomoric approach turn you off and miss something that can be useful.

This book starts out with assumption that the reader already knows more than she/he probably does..Terms I have little to no understanding of are bandied about starting on page 1. I gave up and ordered 8.1 The Missing Manual. It hasn't arrived yet, but seven years ago, which was the last time I bought a new computer, the Missing Manual book provided all I needed to get up and running...

In the early 1830s, Sarah Grimk� and her younger sister, Angelina, were the most infamous women in America. They had rebelled so vocally against their family, society, and their religion that they were reviled, pursued, and exiled from their home city of Charleston, South Carolina, under threat of death. Their crime was speaking out in favor of liberty and equality and for African American slaves and women, arguments too radically humanist even for the abolitionists of their time. Their lectures drew crowds of thousands, even (shockingly, then) men, and their most popular pamphlet directly inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom's Cabin--published 15 years later. These women took many of the first brutal backlashes against feminists and abolitionists, but even their names are barely known now. Sue Monk Kidd became fascinated by these sisters, and the question of what compelled them to risk certain fury and say with the full force of their convictions what others had not (or could not). She discovered that in 1803, when Sarah turned 11, her parents gave her the “human present” of 10-year-old Hetty to be her handmaid, and Sarah taught Hetty to read, an act of rebellion met with punishment so severe that the slave girl died of "an unspecified disease" shortly after her beating. Hugely disappointed in Oprah, not Sue Monk Kidd

I want to add my voice to the legions who are disappointed in this purchase because of the Oprah comments. If I had known the book was going to be formatted this way, I NEVER would have bought it. EVER. Imagine sitting down to read one of your favorite authors, and just as the book is pulling you in, someone interrupts you. And then again. And again. It's HORRID. I wouldn't mind reading Ms. Winfrey's comments once I had a chance to enjoy the book and form my OWN impressions, but this is insulting. It speaks to the enormity of Ms. Winfrey's ego that she thinks her words are as important as the author's. I think Amazon should give all of us disgruntled customers a chance to buy another edition, and "credit" us the amount we spent on this travesty.

Oprah's notes interfere

I would like to be able to eliminate Oprah's notes. They do not have importance to the interpretation of the text for this reader. Those comments get in the way of being able to read smoothly without interruption. I am really unhappy with the purchase of this e-book. I like the writing of Sue Monk Kidd and wish I had purchased this book in paper so that I could skip over Oprah's notes.

Or go to the Oprah Book Club edition and click on the plus sign next to the Kindle Edition in the Formats box, which has the pricing for hardcover, audio, etc. Click on the picture of the book jacket to "Look Inside" to ensure that you are purchasing the copy without underlined passages and blue ink. This version is $11.99 as opposed to $11.24 for the version with Oprah's notes. Thanks to readers who posted this information. I would not have found this version without their help.

Drita My Homegirl is the story of Drita, a Muslim Albanian refugee who has immigrated to New York City from war-torn Kosovo. Drita longs to make friends in school, but faces difficulty due to her limited English. Drita My Homegirl is narrated through alternating chapters told from the perspective of two fourth graders, Drita and Maxie. As their stories unfold, their unlikely friendship grows against the backdrop of both girls feeling a bit like outsiders. Drita is trying to deal with immigrating as well as her mother's depression, and at the same time she is also struggling to fit in at school. Maxie, on the other hand, appears to be a fun-loving comedian at school, but she too is struggling outside of school as she attempts to deal with the death of her mother. I just found another book to add to my "good books" shelf. That's what one of the girls in our PK3-8 school call this particular section in the library. This is where I keep books I think will appeal to girls third through eighth grade. The top of this low bookcase is about shoulder height, just right for browsing books about girls. This is my story, I am the librarian.

A first novel, "Drita" is the story of a ten-year old girl who comes with her mother, grandmother, and brother from war-torn Kosova (that is how it is spelled in her country) to join the father, who has worked and saved a year to bring his family over. The females are dismayed by the dirty, unkempt apartment and spend their first few hours cleaning it.

The story shifts viewpoint every other chapter. Chapter two begins with Maxie's story. Maxie is African-America with grief in her heart over the loss of her mother in an auto accident two years previously. Wise Ms. Salvato, their fourth grade teacher, gets Maxie interested in Drita and assigns Drita's journey and country to Maxie and Drita as their big project.

The two girls do become friends in a most unlikely way. What a sweet and kind friendship it becomes, which, of course, is the main plot. Reverberating around these two are family members whose lives are touched and changed in such loving ways because of this friendship.

This book is highly recommended for friendship, geography and history lessons, resolution of family problems for both girls, and the sheer joy of the story. No girl could ask for better!

Les R. Dlabay, Ed.D. is Professor of Business in the Department of Economics and Business at Lake Forest College in Illinois. He has taught more than 30 different business courses in high school, community college, university, teacher preparation, and adult education programs. Dr. Dlabay has presented more than 300 teacher workshops and seminars emphasizing interactive learning strategies, including team projects and field research activities. His "hobbies" include a cereal package collection (from over 100 countries) and banknotes from 200 countries; these are used to teach economic, cultural, and political aspects of global business. In an effort to prepare students to do business in varied economic settings, Professor Dlabay makes extensive use of class assignments related to world hunger, poverty, micro-finance, and micro-enterprise.

James L. Burrow, Ph.D., has a background in marketing and human resource development. He works regularly with the business community and other organizations as a consultant on marketing and performance improvement strategies including the use of the Internet as an education and training resource. He recently retired from the faculty of North Carolina State University, where he served as the coordinator of the graduate Training and Development Program for over fifteen years. Dr. Burrow received degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Nebraska in marketing and marketing education.

A Masterwork

A commentary that does not skim over texts, but goes into detail of each verse (1,400 pages for the two volumes). The two volumes have been my companion now for several months in my morning Bible study, and will be for a few months more.
Though the detail of Hebrew words is gone into, it is done in such a way that the non-Hebrew-scholar can understand. And the "Theological implications" sections at the end of each portion are a mine of spiritual treasures.
Though I am possibly not well placed as a layman to judge, for me it is THE study on Ezechiel to study.

The book is easy to read through with lots of footnotes

The book is easy to read through with lots of footnotes. Has been a big help in understanding the evil of idolatry and how far the implications reach even into our time today. While the original words were given to Israel by God through Ezekiel, the message is still relevant for us. The book helps to understand the multiple sins that were being practiced by the people that thought they were in God's favor but in reality were not, due to their wayward state of seeking out the false gods of the pagan nations. The book will shed light upon your own heart and show where repentance is needed since we all are guilty of idolatry in various forms and degrees. The book helps in unpacking the symbolic language used by Ezekiel to convey God's glory and the kinds of wrath that play out in the book. Pick up a copy and read and grow!

Key book for ad avanced professional level understanding re vaccines. Caution... is 1500 pages and not immediately useful for most physicians, nurses or students. For most purposes, an excellent free book re vaccines with all the needed essentials is simply the CDC "Pink Book" on the Epidemiology of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkbook/index.html). which runs to about 300 pages + about 100 pages of appendixes so sufficient for most purposes. But for a researcher or a consultant or someone who has to give talks to professional groups about vaccines then this book edited by Plotkin, Orenstein and Offit book does indeed remain an essential reference.
