Bernard Porter finds that Britain and America had uncannily similar imperial histories before the present day, but that now considerable differences exist. He argues that post-2001 American imperialism is an imperialism of a different sort--a “super-imperialism” that no longer repeats British imperialism but now transcends it.
Porter’s comparison illuminates British imperialism, including Tony Blair’s; the American version of imperialism administered under George W. Bush; and the relation of imperialism to such phenomena as capitalism, globalization, free trade, and international security. His insights are often surprising and always original and thought-provoking.

Useful study of empire

Bernard Porter, an emeritus professor of history at the University of Newcastle, has written many books on the British Empire. This lively essay investigates the similarities and differences between the British and American empires.

He writes, "As well as being as imperialist as Britain, America was also imperialist in most of the same ways." Both claimed repeatedly not to be imperialist, even to be anti-imperialist. The British Empire was no good at nation-building; witness Palestine, Uganda, Sudan, India/Pakistan, etc., so it created hardly any viable nations. The USA has done even worse, witness Somalia, Haiti, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Porter points out, "There are many similarities between the two `empires'. Both countries' denials of their `imperialisms', or at least of their imperialistic intents, are one. Capitalism is a second. Both `empires' have arisen and then spread around the world on the crests of waves of expanding commerce and foreign investment, called `free trade' in the one case, `globalisation' in the other. Oil is a common factor later on. Good intentions are another. Both the British and the Americans claimed to be `civilising' forces, even `liberating' ones."

He notes, "In reality, the only truly exceptional feature of the USA is her belief in her exceptionalism - the myth, or delusion that she is different in the ways she thinks she is; but that could be enough to keep her empire going on its own. Myths are powerful things." This inflation of the power of myths is idealism - only cartoon characters do not fall as soon as they step off a cliff.

Quoting Condoleezza Rice, Porter writes, "`History marches towards markets and democracy'; a market-orientated type of democracy that is, where competition is all, and cooperation, whether in domestic or in international affairs, simply slows things down." Our capitalist ruling class loves the half-witted dogmas that markets produce democracy and that competition trumps cooperation.

Writing about the methods of barbarism that empires always fall back on - torture, concentration camps, internment, death squads - Porter wisely concludes, "Alien rule, whatever its other benefits might be, invariably gives rise to this sort of thing. We should remember that before wishing it on people today."

Jim Clover is an Adjunct Professor at California State University, San Bernardino and Retired teacher at Riverside County of Education Career Technical Program for 20 years. Coordinator Riverside Medical Clinic's Sports Clinic and SPORT Foundation, Mr. Clover coordinates sports medicine services for 40 schools in Southern California. He invented the Trainer's Angel (a cutting tool to remove football helmets in emergencies) and received the NATA's Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 2004. In addition to a holding a Master's Degree in Education, he is an NATA Certified Athletic Trainer, Physical Therapy Assistant, and NASM Corrective Exercises Specialist.

Must have for Nirvana/Kurt Cobain Fans

Nirvana fans will love this (although, be aware; most of the photos are of Kurt Cobain). The photography is excellent and candid; displayed in a "coffee-table" book style- large pictures and lots of them. Lots of black & white photos as well as color. The photos of Kurt with Frances as an infant will tug at your heart.

If you love Nirvana, you've got yourself a book.

Not being a big fan of Nirvana, I wasn't sure what to get my sister for her birthday. My sister is a huge fan, you see, and she loves books with pictures. After searching far and wide for a book with Nirvana and pictures of Nirvana, I discovered this one.
If you are looking to buy a book with photos from the days of Nirvana, then this is the one for you. Not only does over half the book contain large pictures, they are all (most, there are a few in black and white) in color, and they are rare photos that don't appear as often as most others do.
This book is a great buy for the Nirvana fan. If you love Nirvana, you've got yourself a book.

Nirvana captured in the Raw.

This book is by far the nicest Nirvana book I own. It's a beautiful, thick paperback, with fantastic rare photographs. For a long time, the only Nirvana books around were information heavy, and focused a lot on Kurt's death. This book captures exactly what they were, A great band. Pure punk rock, pure soul, pure energy. It's a wonderful memory of a great band. You'd be mad not to buy this book.

About the Author
Giorgio Piola was born in Genoa in 1948 and since 1969 he has been a journalist and television commentator on all Formula One World Championships. Since 1994, he has been the author of the book “Formula One Technical Analysis”, in which he analyses the evolution of the cars year-by-year.

A fascinating look at the mechanical and aerodynamic details of F1 cars

This Italian book is beautifully printed and illustrated. The drawings are very detailed and great fun to see. You don't see this kind of detail on the F1 TV broadcasts as teams often try to keep their latest changes away from the cameras.
The text was originally written in Italian. The English translation often leaves something to be desired and the reader not infrequently has to study it for a moment to work out what the author, filtered through translators who may not be that technically astute, is trying to say.
Sometimes the text doesn't quite match the drawings, or vise versa. The book is obviously prepared in a rush to get it out soon after the F1 season is over.
Nevertheless, this is the best technical overview I've found. This is fourth season I've bought one. Recommended if you don't mind the occasional bit of confusion.

If you are looking to see what is under the complex aerodynamic coverings, you can't do better than this series of books from Giorgio Piola. He has been doing technical illustrations on F1 since I can remember, so this series of books just put all of that great material from each year into one book, or rather 15, since that is how long this series has been going on. Without checking each week to see what the teams have brewed up, this reviews all the evolution and revolution in design through the year. The illustrations are detailed enough to really show those tiny modifications that are incorporated from race to race, so if this is something you really want to understand, you can't find anything better.
Ya gotta be a bit OCD to really like it, but that is what this stuff is all about, don't you think?

I got this for my dad for x-mas and we both like it very much because we are F1 fans. The only thing is that there is little info on the engines other than that it is great.
