As I stood in the stores, pondering my decision for my next "skills and drills" book, I happened to stumble upon a copy of "Play The Brazilian Way", the last one on the shelf. Out of curiosity, I opened the book, and the next thing I knew, I spent over an hour gazing at the amazing techniques taught in this book. From one-on-ones to skilled passing and fluidity, this book has it all. In full color, and displayed in a finely-illustrated step-by-step format, this book is a joy to read. Coaches and players alike will benifit from the drills and skills taught in this book, playing according to the legendary Brazilian method of soccer.
For those of you who are content-conscious, there's nothing to worry about. Each page is filled to the brim with useful tips and information, plus profiles and advice(not to mention deadly one-on-one moves) from some of the greatest Brazilian players of all time(Pele, Garrincha, Rivelino,Tastao, etc.) You'll never stop learning! This is a five star book that is especially useful for 8-15 year old players. If you know any aspiring Ronaldo's, this would be an excellent choice. It looks great and has lots to offer in 96 pages.
Features include: A useful skills/drills section; an informative Brazilian soccer history lesson; and best of all, a ' moves to beat your opponent' section, that profiles a number of famous Brazilian soccer stars, and gives a signature move for each player, including the big three: Pele, Romario and Ronaldo. By the way, these one-on-one moves are helpful for adult players too.
One of the problems facing young soccer players in North America is they play soccer, but don't watch it. Compare that to the aspiring basketball player, who religiously watches the NBA, and then practices and emulates the moves of the star players.
Therefore, the 'moves to beat your opponent' section is truly useful for injecting some creativity and imagination into youngsters' developing games.
This book is also just plain FUN, and I wish I had it when I was 10...

About the Author

Kathleen O'Neal Gear is a former state historian and archaeologist for Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska for the U.S. Department of the Interior. She has twice received the federal government's Special Achievement Award for ""outstanding management"" of our nation's cultural heritage.

W. Michael Gear holds a master's degree in archaeology and has worked as a professional archaeologist since 1978. He is principal investigator for Wind River Archaeological Consultants.

Together they have written the North America's Forgotten Past series (People of the Morning Star, People of the Songtrail, People of the Mist, People of the Wolf, among others); and the Anasazi Mysteries series. The Gears live in Thermopolis, WY.

Exceptional Series

The Gears have done it again. Each book of the series, including this one, kept me sitting on the edge of my chair from the first cover to the final pages. They have a way of bringing excitement and suspense into every story. I highly recommend any of the Gear's books for anyone interested in archeology, Native Americans, or just a really good story. I'ave also found that their books have parallels to what is going on in the world and in the nation, today and leave me with things to think about. I'm anxiously awaiting their next book.

I haven't finished the book yet, but as is usual with the Gears books it is a page turner. You are right there suffering with the people, rejoicing with them, understanding all that they are feeling. The Gears give you so much information about the people and the lives they live that you feel you understand exactly what it was like to live in their time period. Anyone interested in the lives of the early Americans will enjoy this book and any of the books by the Gears. At times you would like to be there and live the lives they live, close to nature and in tune with all that is around you.

Love the Gear's writings. Having lived and travelled in many of the places depicted in their books, it is thrilling to read their descriptions of the Native Americans in their own time frame.

Colin Drake's New Book Is a Modern Spiritual Classic

An invisible obstacle blocks spiritual seekers when they approach non-duality. The greatest service a teacher can offer is to point out with vivid clarity and shocking directness the utter simplicity of the work they have embraced.

The seeker by definition will continue seeking. Rarely does the seeker realize that the very act of seeking instantly removes them from the possibility of enlightenment. In spite of well-intentioned advice like "be here now" the seeker plows bravely on, convinced that his or her liberation awaits.

The extraordinary gift that Colin Drake brings to the table is a unique talent for simplicity. Albert Einstein once said "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." Einstein could have been describing Colin's new book "The Simplicity of Awakening."

Colin aptly uses the term "pointers" in the subtitle. If somebody is looking for their glasses and they've got them hanging on a chain around their neck, then they already have their eyeglasses even though they are looking for them. All you have to do is point to their eyeglasses (akin to the Zen finger pointing to the moon). If that fails -- and it usually does -- then you strive as resourcefully as you can to point out the self-evident truth that their passionate search for their glasses somewhere else than right here is the very thing that is preventing them from finding their glasses!

This invisible challenge shapeshifts into a foggy swamp full of quicksand when the teaching is delivered via a book. We are expecting to learn something from the book. We expect to gain knowledge or some other value from the book. Put bluntly, we expect to gain something we don't have yet.

In Chapter One of Colin's book there are two elegantly explained practices that will make the truth clear for you should you do them with full commitment and literally as described. Even so, Colin boldly delivers 22 more chapters to cover important topics like the Stone Buddha myth, pure awareness ("Awareness" as Colin likes to call it -- with a capital A) and suffering, pure awareness and bliss, pure awareness and death, and so on. In brief, how to live in and as Awareness in real life from A to Z.

He approaches this simple essence sought by the seeker of enlightenment from 23 different angles. It is many more angles or perspectives than that given the depth, variety and creativity of his coverage within each chapter. But why would he do this?

The answer is found in the sneakiest trick that the ego mind or I-thought (or whatever you want to call it) has to offer. It's incredibly effective, given that nearly 7 billion people on planet earth have fallen for it. Do you know what it is? Please pause for a moment and ask yourself what this potent trick could be.

Have you heard the expression "hide in plain sight"? That's the trick. It is wickedly successful!

The seeker fails to grasp that this humble little self-effacing conscious presence, this simple Awareness supporting everything small and great, is quite literally IT. This meek moment to moment illumination is taken to be trivial and unimportant due to its familiarity. It seems so commonplace, so mundane.

Colin's new book is a master guide, tough and lean like a reality fitness coach, to finally "getting" it. Alaskan musher Jessie Arnold has certainly used up more than nine lives even before the start of this ninth solid adventure in a series that has won both Anthony and Macavity awards. Musher Jessie Arnold, in her ninth adventure, is enjoying the Alaskan spring and the construction of her new cabin, its predecessor having been destroyed by an arsonist in Beneath the Ashes (2000). When the basement is dug, however, a skeleton is discovered along with a necklace linked to a victim of a serial killer. As she becomes involved in the investigation of a convicted serial killer and a present-day copycat, the fiercely independent Jessie finds it difficult to accept help even when she is slated as a victim. Lyrical descriptions of Alaska's wilderness and geology will delight the reader. Training sled dogs off season and cabin construction are a big part of Jessie's life, as she fights demons from her own past and comes to terms with the breakup of her relationship with an Alaska state trooper. Readers who enjoy an Alaskan setting should also try Dana Stabenow's mysteries, while Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series would be a good choice for those who like to be immersed in the natural world. COLD COMPANY is a fast paced read.

If you enjoy a mystery story full of red herrings, stalwart characters, an exotic Alaskan setting coupled with enough twists and turns to titillate the most ardent armchair sleuth, COLD COMPANY by Sue Henry is just the ticket.

Jessie Arnold is a well-known "dog musher" who was the target of a serial arsonist who destroyed her home in Henry's earlier book, BENEATH THE ASHES. Now with work under way to rebuild her lost log cabin, she finds a skeleton in the dig. Along with the male bones, investigators find a butterfly necklace purported to belong to a young woman who disappeared more than 20 years ago. Could her bones be buried near this body? Could Jessie's land be another burial site used by serial killer Robert Hansen, who was convicted of 17 murders and is now spending his waning days in prison?

This theory is ruled out almost immediately when the bodies of two recently murdered women are found in close proximity to the construction site. Everyone involved in the investigation agrees that a copycat killer is on the loose...but who and why? After all, in the small, claustrophobic towns of rural Alaska, neighbors and workers are friends who know each other. Or do they?

If these unnerving events aren't enough to jangle the nerves of ever independent Jessie Arnold, she also begins to receive anonymous gifts in the form of a single rose left first on her doorstep and then in her kitchen. At first, she thinks they may be a surprise from her former lover but then realizes that their break, while painful, was permanent. So, who is trespassing on her property and invading her most private space?

As all of the book's events unfold, the Alaskan summer solstice slowly melts away toward winter; Jessie and her friends are convinced that they are on the trail of a different serial murderer. They wend their way along wilderness trails that lead deep into heavy forest cover to emerge slipping and sliding over the icy glacial terrain that surrounds their part of the world.

Sue Henry is an adept storyteller. In Jessie Arnold she has created a prototype of a single, independent, self-supporting and intelligent but stubborn woman, who always wants things her way. But Jessie is not hard or cold hearted. She is has the courage to reexamine and reevaluate her opinions, behaviors, strengths, and vulnerabilities without compromising her integrity. These characteristics save Henry's protagonist from being a stereotype and rescue her tales from banality.

COLD COMPANY is a fast paced read, perfect for a hot summer day.
